A planetary gear set is made up of three types of gears: a sun gear, planet gears, and a ring gear. The sun gear is located at the center and transmits torque to the planet gears which are typically mounted on a moveable carrier . The planet gears orbit around the sun gear and mesh with an outer ring gear . Planetary gear systems can vary in complexity from very simple to intricate compound systems, depending on the application.
The external gear attached to the central axis of a planetary gear mechanism is called the sun gear. The sun gear, together with the planetary gears, internal gears, and planetary carriers that connect the planetary gears, constitutes the main element of the planetary gear mechanism. When selecting planetary gear mechanisms, the sun gear is used as the input side in the planetary and star type designs, while it is fixed in the solar type design.
